Corrosion Inhibition Studies by Thiophene Derivative in the Presence of Surfactants on Carbon Steel in Hydrochloric Acid

Abstract


In this paper, the inhibition efficiency of three types of surfactants, namely sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80), in the absence and presence of thiophene derivative (2-methyl thiophene) on carbon steel in 2 M HCl were investigated at different concentrations, immersion times and temperatures. The study were carried out through weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization technique. Inhibition efficiency was increased with addition of thiophene derivative to the corrosive media containing surfactants. It was found that the adsorption of the inhibitors on carbon steel surface followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The morphology test was done on carbon steel surface before and after placing in the inhibitor solutions using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the order of inhibition efficiency is SLS > CTAB > Tween 80.
